This is a print from my 2010 painting about Australian journalist and information activist Julian Assange. It grapples with our difficult understanding of new technologies, new capabilities and international law. The painting formed part of a poster exhibition I participated in at an international workshop titled "Hitting the Target? How New Capabilities Shape International Intervention" at the Centre for International Intervention [cii], School of Politics, University of Surrey, UK. Analysts from defence agencies in the UK, Europe, and the US also attended. Chansons de geste are medieval poems which were initially sung in old French and translate roughly to ‘songs of heroic deeds’. Here is one definition. I worked with an amazing Australian translator of chansons des gest Michael Newth in 2005-6 and helped to produce an audio version of his Song of Roland in 2011 (see photo of me with Michael and voice actor Greg Marston). In this & other paintings I re-interpreted this literary genre on my canvas. This painting was also a winner in the shortlist for the London International Creative Competition (LICC) in 2012 under the category of Painting.
